The Alchemist's Crusade
If all the world were turpentine
And all the fish were socks
If anyone knew Caroline
Had lived inside a box
If ice were aluminium
If life were worth the tedium
If all we knew were sacrosanct
And ignorance were bliss
If all the Saducees were ranked
By Judas, kiss for kiss
If elephants had equipoise
To school unbalanced sailor-boys
If all our foes were overcome
And three were not a crowd
If all marched to a different drum
That seldom played aloud
If time were not a subtle trick
To drain all solace from the sick
Why then, my friends, the truth would soar
On wings more swift than song!
And then we'd know what life is for
And why it seems so long.
We'd know our purpose bright and true
And loads of other ballyhoo.
