Shirley, My Wife for a Day
Some caged bird squawks
In Crossmaglen
About his cottage cheese
But as he talks
The caged bird walks
Around his owner's knees
And walks back round again
Some enraged woman screams
At repetition
About her bulging waist
Lie some infectious memes.
The same old themes
And badly broken dreams
Some knees complain
Of overworking
And the onset of arthritis
But as they strain
They are not shirking
However fuscous the light is
Sometimes these poems stink
When the poets drink
And sometimes they shine
And nearly rhyme
But not very often
