Long Unbidden Melody
Song and cheer, for you I long
It's been so long, I feel abashed
This tune, I know, has been re-hashed
I knew this tune when I was young
And still recall when it was sung
Upon the Beacon Theater stage
For stage folk it was all the rage
When young Sir Larry trod the boards
And parrots were living and pined for no fjords
'Twas whistled then by high and low
Now I forget - how did it go?
Doobee doobee doo, dah dah dah dee dum
Yes, that is the ditty I still often hum
I stole it from my main man, Frank
When young, he really was quite lank
He was a strange one in the night
With odd, perverted appetites
As I recall, the year was vile
I've filed it in my round dreck file
I tried to do it my way too
For I was young - I little knew
How theatre life can change a man
Now, let me tell how it began ...
