Railing Against Sooty
I promise not to mention lice
If you'll not mention fleas
I shan't say 'germs' for any price
Or make you ill-at-ease
It simply wouldn't seem too nice
Witholding my advice:
Return each favour fifty-fold
Zinc for silver, lead for gold
I promise not to go to France
If you'll not mention Greece
I sha'n't take e'en the slightest chance
With flag nor fleur-de-lys
'T'would not be worth the song and dance
In such a circumstance:
Return each favour hundred-fold
New for little, big for old
I promise not to fall asleep
Unless you bite mine ear
I sha'n't disturb your slumber deep
With muted squeals of fear
I'll leave you with your prancing sheep
To look before they leap:
Return each favour ten for one
Moon for morning, night for sun
I promise not to slit your throat
If you'll not sing that song
I shan't attempt to milk your goat
Or wear your spangled thong
But as I founder in the moat
I'll learn these words by rote:
Return each favour nine times nine
Milk for brandy, cream for wine
