Prefaces Are Lovely
Let us be pretentious, erudite, utilizing abstruse references, esoterica
And none of the juvenile rubbish we so detest in America
Let us be pedantic showoffs, utterly humorless, misogynistic to boot
And approach the art of rhyming by an unexpected route
Let us wax polysyllabic and pooh-pooh most professorially
in abstruse footnotes, and be savage editorially
Let us be transient and tractable, and not parlous or haughty
And demonstrate to the world the serenity that comes after forty
